The original Farmhouse was on the tax listings in 1802. Over the years, it’s been added to and updated, but continues to have traditional Vermont Farmhouse charm and appeal. The house sits on a plateau above the North Branch of the Williams River. Private and secluded, yet less than 8 miles to the Okemo Mountain resort and town of Ludlow, or, 7 miles in the other direction to the village of Chester. Both towns with galleries, restaurants and gift shops to explore. As soon as you turn off the main paved road onto the dirt road travelling along the river, you’ll start to experience the beauty of the Smokeshire Valley. Then, when driving up our hill and arriving in the front yard looking out onto fields surrounded by forest you’ll feel like you’ve come to into another world.
The house is adjacent to our working farm. Depending on the time of year, you may see sheep or horses grazing in the fields, ducks sitting in the pond, a fox crossing a snowy pasture or see an eagle flying overhead. There are old logging roads and trails throughout the local woods, great for exploring, hiking or snow-shoeing & cross country skiing. Some of the old roads meet up with the VAST (Vermont Association of Snow Travelers) maintained trails. These are great for snowmobiling in the winter, or trail-bike riding in the summer & fall. It’s a short walk down the hill to the river for rock-hopping or try your hand at panning for gold!
The farmhouse has 5 bedrooms (4 upstairs, 1 downstairs), sleeping 10 people comfortably. There are two full baths (1 downstairs, 1 upstairs – there are also two extra sinks in a vanity upstairs outside the bathroom). A large eat-in kitchen with updated appliances and a washer and dryer. A dining room, opens into a large living room with a fieldstone fireplace. On the other side of the house is a library for those who’d like to retreat to a quiet place to read.
The house recently installed heating/AC systems to make it more comfortable any time of year.
Off the living room is a door leading outside to a stone patio surrounded by a large yard. On the patio in the summer are a table and chairs and a gas grill, in the winter stand around the fire pit! There is also a screened in porch or “mud room” where you first come in – sit outside in the warm weather and listen to nature, or have a dry place to take off boots and store your skis in the winter
Agrotourism - Depending on the time of year, if you want to experience picking fresh blueberries or help out with “haying”, help to move or feed sheep or learn how to harness a work horse, we love to share our experience. Horse drawn hay rides (or sleigh rides) are available with notice and weather dependent.
Traveling with horses? There is a paddock and two large box stalls under one of the barns. Call ahead for more details.
